Why This Matters

The Problem We're Solving

Africa faces a healthcare crisis that technology can help address. The numbers tell the story.

1.1
Doctors per 1,000 people
WHO recommends a minimum of 4.45 per 1,000. Africa has the widest gap globally.
70%
Deaths from preventable diseases
Most fatalities in Sub-Saharan Africa are from diseases that can be prevented or managed with early detection.
~$1B
Annual health-tech investment gap
While the US and UK attract $2B+ each year in health-tech funding, Africa receives a fraction of that.
<5%
Health workers with digital tools
The vast majority of frontline health workers still operate without any digital infrastructure.

Specialisations

Program Tracks

Choose the track that matches your skills and passion. Each track is project-based and ends with a production-ready solution.

AI-Powered Diagnostics

12 WEEKS

Build machine learning models for medical image analysis, symptom screening, and early disease detection. Train models on African health data and deploy them on Rails Cloud VPS with GPU acceleration.

Digital Health Records

10 WEEKS

Design and build interoperable electronic health record systems. Learn FHIR standards, build secure patient portals using Rails Vault API, and handle offline-first sync for rural clinics.

Telemedicine & Remote Care

10 WEEKS

Build real-time video consultation platforms, appointment booking systems, and remote patient monitoring dashboards using Rails Co-Stream and Rails Media APIs.

Health Data Analytics

8 WEEKS

Analyse disease outbreaks, track health outcomes, and build epidemiological dashboards. Work with real public health datasets and deploy analytics pipelines on Rails Cloud.

Medical IoT & Wearables

12 WEEKS

Connect medical devices and wearables to cloud backends. Build real-time vitals monitoring, alerting systems, and device management platforms on Rails Cloud infrastructure.

Built On Rails Cloud

Technology Stack

Every participant gets full access to the Rails Cloud platform. Build with production-grade APIs and infrastructure from day one.

Rails Cloud VPS
Virtual private servers with GPU options for ML model training and inference.
Rails Auth API
OTP login, user management, sessions, KYC, and two-factor authentication.
Rails Media API
Video upload, transcoding, streaming, and medical image storage.
Rails Pay API
Digital wallets, peer-to-peer transfers, and payment processing for health services.
Rails Vault API

What You'll Build

Example Challenges

Each cohort tackles real healthcare problems. Here are examples of challenges from past and upcoming tracks.

AI Diagnostics

Malaria Screening from Blood Smear Images

Build a CNN model that detects malaria parasites in thin blood smear images with 95%+ accuracy. Deploy as a mobile-friendly API on Rails Cloud VPS.

Digital Health Records

Offline-First Patient Records for Rural Clinics

Design a FHIR-compliant EHR that works offline and syncs when connectivity is available. Handle conflict resolution for shared patient records.

Telemedicine

Video Consultation Platform for Maternal Care

Build a real-time video consultation platform connecting expectant mothers in rural areas with ob-gyns in cities. Include appointment scheduling and follow-up reminders.

Health Analytics

Cholera Outbreak Early Warning Dashboard

Combine weather, sanitation, and clinic data to predict cholera outbreaks 2-3 weeks in advance. Visualise hotspots on an interactive map.

Medical IoT

Remote Vital Signs Monitoring for CHWs

Connect pulse oximeters and blood pressure cuffs to a cloud dashboard. Alert community health workers when a patient's vitals fall outside safe ranges.

Cross-Track

Drug Supply Chain Tracker

Track pharmaceutical shipments from manufacturer to last-mile delivery. Detect counterfeit medicines and predict stock-outs at rural dispensaries.
